FIRE BRIGADES
COMPETITIONS AT WESTPORT. MARRED BY BAD WEATHER. WESTPORT, November 1. It is indeed a pity that the enthusiasm and untiring energy expended by the members of the Fire Brigade to make the annual demonstrations a success should have been marred yesterday by atrocious weather* conditions. Heavy rain was experienced throughout the day and its incessant nature made matters very miserable for the competitors. The ground was in a sodden state, and was by no means conducive to anything like startling achievements, but despite this, the careful training which the fire-fighters had undergone was reflected in the smart times registered. Teams were present from Ross, Ivurnara, Cobden, Greymouth, Hokitika, Westport, Otira, Denniston and Reefton. Results were:

At this stage owing to heavy rain, it was impossible to proceed with, the Five Men Reel event, which was decided on Sunday morning in beautiful weather. The result was as follows:

On Saturday night at a social function held in the local station at which all visiting firemen were present the presentation of prizes took place and a very pleasant time was spent. GROGAN SHIELD TO HOKITIKA. The prizes offered for the highest aggregate points, which included the coveted Grogan Shield, were won by the Hokitika; representatives.
