STATE OF PARTIES. GOVERNMENT. The State of the Parties is: Conservatives ' 471 . National Labpur 14 National Liberals 63 National Independents ... 3 Total 557 OPPOSITION. Labour / 48 Liberal 7 Others 2 Total 57 Seven remaining seats were undeclared to-night. FRENCH SURPRISE. " 1 (Received this day at 11.15 a.in.) * PARIS, October 28. The defeat of Mr Henderson surprised France more than any other, The “Matin” says England has provided an impressive spectacle and magnificent recovery. The election will have an enormous percussion, world wide. The English people have shown a determination to react strongly against a policy of disorder and waste, even in working class districts. MR RAMSAY MACDONALD. LONDON, October 28. Mr Ramsay MacDonald interviewed at Seaham awaiting his own figures, said the election results were astounding. The most gratifying features ■were Mr Thomas’s noble win and Sir Samuel’s defeat of his Conservative opponent. Nothing shows more clearly that the election is on National and not on Party issues. LABOUR VIEW. f LONDON, October 28. The “Guardian” in' a leader says the new Parliament will be protectionist to the core. Mr MacDonald’s tragedy is just beginning. He and the Liberals in the Government are completely prisoners of the Conservatives. NOTABLES WHO WON. NOTABLES WHO LOST. 'Received this dav at 1.5 p.rn.) LONDON, October 28. The best index of how persuasion broke down the resentment which the party machine tried to stir up a week ago, was Mr Thomas’ drooping spirits, as he feared Derby had forsaken him, but Mr MacDonald’s visit worked wonders and turned the currents to success. The family gift of impressiveness enabled Malcolm MacDonald to entrench himself more firmly at Bassetlaw. Labour’s cup of bitterness was filled when Bcvin MacDonald’s chiei castigator failed to hold the hitherto safe seat of Gateshead. Clvdes'iders, however, retained the picturesque extremist Maxton with a halved majority there. Throughout Britain there was a thrill, the afternoon at the news of Mr MacDonald’s vindication at. Seaham, against almost heartrending odds. It was indeed a miracle poll. Wedgwood Benn, ex-Secretary. for India was rejected by a fourteen thousand majority for Aberdeen North which had been one oi the safest of Labom seats since 1918. -- 1 Kenworthy was decisively thrown out. Churchill’s majority was easily the largest of his varied political career, . Brighton eclipsed all records with huge Conservative majorities. While the Duchess of Atholl and Lady Astor remain to give the House a t.minine dignity, it has lost the touch 0 f aaiety and irresponsibility personified
in Eilen Wilkinson and Jennie Lee, both victims of the Nationalist avalanche. • Labour, apart from unassailable strongholds, suffered a staggering crash, Edinburgh and Glasgow Nationalists wresting eight seats'. MR MACDONALD’S MOVES. REFORMING THE MINISTRY. •LONDON, October 28. Mr Ramsay MacDonald is expected to see the King to-morrow and then hold a 'Cabinet meeting at which the remodelling ol the Ministry will be discussed, as the compact Cabinet ol ten was only a makeshift. There, is a common belief that it will' be quickly enlarged to the- customary twenty, with an upward reshuffling owing to Mr Snowden’s retirement ol the Cliancelloiship and Mr Neville Chamberlain's elevation thereto. In a press statement to-night, Mr MacDonald has not mentioned the matter of developing Empire trade, A COMMONS PROBLEM. The Commons will present a strange spectacle when it re-assembles on 3rd. .\ovember. There will be just sufficient opposition to fill the front bench, with an overllow to the second, whereas it will be a problem what to do with the huge band behind the Ministry. 1; ABO UR OVERWHELMED. MR MACDONALD TRIUMPHANT. LONDON, October 28. The country has not yet recovered its breath at the overwhelming nature of tile Labour rout. < Mr Lloyd George refused to comment. He preferred to await the complete results. The tale of Labour defeats, several by National Labour, continued throughout the day. Nine women have thus far been eiected, including seven new members. Thirty-one candidates so far have forfeited their deposits and include seven Communists and eleven Mosleyites. Tired, but triumphant, about describes Mr MacDonald on entering No. 10, flushed with the news that he had won Seaham. He said the Nation had shown it was not going to stand any humbug in putting the finances in order.
The Conservatives now have a clear majority against any possible opposition combination.
