The particulars published yesterday of various activities and developments in South Westland, indicate that that larger half of Westland, continues to prosper aind progress even in these times of depression. The southern tract of country does not enjoy the favour it should. It is probably because it is somewhat remote, and its resource are not fully realised. But news of the stock coming out of the district is arresting, and shows wnait can be done. The produce of the district is very substantial. This is evidenced by the condition of the various settlements, all of which present a picture of success in the good homesteads, the fine herds, and the prolific stock returns. While dairying flourishes in the upper part nearest the regular market, stock raising is the sheet anchor of the lower portion, and there is no douht about the quality of the stock coming forward. Looking pif the success of dairying, an expansion further south is justified as ronding is developed. The extension of the h’-eat South Hoad to Bruce Bnv is fully justified by the prospects of the district. Nowndnvs motor transport has annihilate ! dirtrncu and with good roads, d-drying will flourish further south. There is thus the urgent need for the construction of the Fox and Cook river bridges on the new section of the far south road. The construction of those bridges would be a particular bron> to the locality south of Weheka. and is. an overdue reward for those ni >neer settlers who have opened up the country in nr.iie'o"'ion of the long promised means of safe access. The strongest- representations should be made to the Government to prosecute these works now that the railway policy of the country is stopped.
More money should be at call, while there is ample labour awaiting useful employment.
