NATIVE POPULATION IN CREASE. The annual return of vital statistics for the Dominion as a,t March 31 discloses a 1.49 per cent, increase in the Europe .n population and a 1.76 per cent, increase m the .Maori. Tt is found that much more reliability can be placed upon the Native, figures in recent years, as the Maori people are beginning to realise the necessity and importance of registering births, deaths, and marriages. A few years ago Dr Peter Buck said that a decrease in female population was. not a healthy sign for any race. An official of the Akarana Maori Association states that there has been a marked increase of girls ( in Native families in recent years, and the latest statistical records seem to indicate a better balance of the sexes, due to the increase of females amongst the Maoris.
