PROBATION FOR TWO YEARS. AUCKLAND, October 27. Aniy Maud Christofferson, 72 appeared before Justice Hordmau, for sentence to-idajy, on five charges of false pretence#. Her counsel said that at one stage of her career she was involved in a case of a notorious nature, and that had been dragging on her for many years. She was now destitute and in poor health. Some years ago she married a man who turned out a drunkard and ganibjrer, and eventually ho returned to his native country. At ail times she had to support herself. Thy Salvation Army offered to care lor her, if the Court would grant probation. Thy Judge said the prisoner hud kept out of trouble since 1909, and had been a trusted domestic servant. He was unable to understand how sli e had lapsed again. Although she ban been (glared ,an . ha!/i,tij<)l .criminal, .lip having regard to her ago and th e fact that she had kept free from trouble for twenty years, would grant probation for two years, subject to tile condition she lived at the Salvation Army Home. Accused was led away in tears.
