OBITUARY
MR JOHN L. POTTER. LAST SURVIVOR OF EUREKA. (By Telegraph—-Per Press Association) . TIMARU, October 26. . Mr John Irishman : Potter, who died at Timaru on Saturday, in his ninety-eighth year, was the last survivor of the* ; Eureka Stockade fight in 1854, in .'which he served under Peter Lalor, the rebel leader. The uprising was the sequel to various grievances of the miners, including the high charges for miners’- rights. Mr Potter was able to describe the battle clearly, despite his great age. He wag ex Secretary of Labour and Registar of Industrial Unions fn 1900 and Secretary for eleven years of the Polynesian Society. He retired from the Government service in 1911.
