MAGNET IN THROAT. OPERATION IN LUNG. LONDON, October 13. Claimed to be the first operation of its kind, an electric magnet was successfully used to withdraw a metal obstruction from a child’s lung at Nottingham Hospital. The child had swallowed a iball-bearing, which became embedded in the lung, causing pneumonia, and its resultant weakness did not permit an ordinary operation being carried out. Dr. Bell Tawse decided that the only chance of saving the child’s life was to try the big electric magnet used to withdraw particles from eyes. A rubber tube surmounting an electric bulb was passed down the child’s throat, and with it the surgeon groped for th e obstruction, finding it after great difficulty. An iron rod specially prepa. ed to fit down the throat was inserted, and'the ball-bearing clicked into it and was withdrawn. The child recovered.
