BOWLING
THE SEASON OPENED. The Hokitika Bowling Club opened the season yesterday afternoon under pleasant conditions, except that the rain of the night and early morning had made the green soft. After a showery morning, and early afternoon thu sun came out just before the opening ceremony. There was a capital attenu ante of members and lady supporters. A very dainty afternoon tea was provided by the wives of the President and Vice-President, Mesdames King and Conning, which was served in the pavilion, and fully appreciated. Tile President (Mr C. J. King) extended a hearty welcome to those pre- , sent, expressing his pleasure a.t the excellent attendance winch augured well for the season. He specially wellcoined the ladies whose interest in the welfare of the Club was so much valued. He then called on the VicePresident, Mr J. Conning, who after complimenting Mr J. J. Breeze on his success last year presented him ■ with the Duncan Cup to hold for a year as Singles Champion for the year 1930. 31. The President then stated he had another pleasant duty to perform, to 'present the liiandsoine Kaiapoi rug presented for competition by the late Mr William Newman. This had been competed for two seasons before a winner had been found and lie had pleasure in presenting this to Mr J J. Breeze. Mr J. J. Breeze in acknowledging the two presentations espressed the pleasure he had in holding, the. Cup for the year. . and of accepting the., handsome trophy presented by the huy,,, 'Mr Newman, who had been a valued supporter of the Club.-He was proud 'to have won, tiro competitions and would do bis utmost to retain tue Singles Championship again (bis sea. son. An adjournment was then made to the green where Mrs Conning rolled up the Jack and Mrs King howled up the first bowl declaring the season open, amidst applause.
