MEAN TRICKSTER.
SYMPATHIES ABUSED. LONDON, October 2. A young man posing as a friendless Australian lately perpetrated a number of mean frauds on Australians and Britons. He entered a big London hospital under an assumed name, declaring that he was suffering from war disabilities. The hospital called in specialists and provided special treatment, and the nurses were so sympathetic with the patient that they invited their own friends to visit him. The patient, professing gratitude, secured loans of money on cheques and when leaving even arranged a dinner and theatre party. The guests on arrival found no host, whereupon their suspicions were communicated to the hospital. It was discovered .that the cheques were valueless. The patient stayed at expensive hotels without paying his bills.
