Following two days torrential rains that have fallen in the back country at Reefton, all the rivers were running high. The newly-constructed suspension bridge across the Jnangahua River at Watts’s farm was washed away and very little material from it will be salvaged. The flood in the Marina River washed away the approach to Williscroft’s bridge. This will necessitate traffic fording the river until repairs are effected, but unfortunately there is no stable ford in this locality and care will need to be taken by travellers when negotiating the river.

The death took place at Westport on Monday, of Mrs Elizabeth Stannard. Deceased who was 92 years of age, was a native of Sydney and had spent between 65 and 75 years in the Dominion.. For many years, Mr and Mrs Stannard were proprietors of the Royal Hotel, which Mrs Stannard disposed of on the death of her husband, and then retired into private life. She had no family, but is survived by some nieces.

Throughout Monday and all day on Tuesday a huge gorse fire raged in the Rakaia Riverbed, the reflection at night being visible for a distance of over twenty miles. No damage lias been done by the fire, which was extinguished before travelling down to the Rakaia Huts.

A meeting of ladies was held at tho Town Hall yesterday afternoon, upwards of twenty being present, when it was decided to form a Croquet Club. A discussion took place' as to a site for the green, and ultimately Mesdames .Saywell, Parkhill, Paterson and Conning were appointed to make enquiries as to a suitable location and the cost of same and to report to another meeting to be held a week later.

Clouston), 1 in the Nelson district, says that now that the. beautiful kowhai trees in the -sanctuary are showing a wealth of bloom there can be seen daily dozens of tills flitting from tree to tree taking the nectar from the blossoms. case of cows. Good heifer beef also bad to share in the fall in values. The overflow from the fat sheep yarning oi .3660 head, compared with 3000 last, week had to be accommodated in the store pens. Butchers’ ivo.'-ii ements were more than met. and indifferent, quality was not sought after keenly. The decline over the whole of the sale was of from 2s 6d to 3s 6d a head for

sheep in tile wool, and to a lesser extent for shorn. Spring lambs, of which there was a yarding larger than ae the previous sale, showed no quotable change in price. Vealers held to last week’s rates. There was a slightly weaker demand for pork.

Following a report that the dreaded cattle tick had been found in Taranaki: on a kiwi, Mr W. Harris, Government stock inspector, lias inspected a number of dairy herds in the Te Popo district, and lias found them free from the cattle tick. Mr E. Halcombe, of Urenui, said that a species of tick was invariably found on the kiwi. In 1886 when his mother sent two kiwis to England for the zoo, Sir Joseph Hooker and Sir William Owen, leading naturalists of that day, wrote, thanking Mi's Halcombe for her gift, saying that both kiwis were infected with a. tick similar to the English cattle species, but not the same. Mr Halcombe said that his family often sent kiwis away, and when caught they were always infested with these ticks. He had no doubt that the kiwi caught at Te Popo was infested with the same sort of tick.
