BANKRUPT CHARGED. (By Telegraph —Per Press Association J CHRISTCHURCH, October 14. Before Magistrate Lawry, W. Irving Carney, formerly well-known woolbuyer, was charged with bringing about his bankruptcy by unjustifiable extravagance and contracting debts when he had no reasonable prospect of paying them. The Crown Prosecutor said the deficiency was extremely large. Evidence would be called to show it was obvious that from the state of lfis finances Carney had no chance of paying the debts incurred. Over a period of six wears he overdrew the account by £8206. J. H. Robertson (official assignee) said the deficiency in estate was £13,991. The dividend would be approximately 9d in the pound. Carney pleaded not guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. Bail of £2OO and one suretv of £2OO was granted.
CHARGE OF OBSTRUCTION
AUCKLAND, October 14 15 men who were arrested in the house from which a family was later evicted, appeared at the Police Court this morning and were remanded till to-morrow mi charges of assaulting and obstructing a bailiff, also that with intent to carryout the common purpose of assembling so a.s to cause a reasonable fear that the peace would be disturbed tumultuously. The police wanted a remand till the 20th but the Magistrate, Mr Hunt, disagreed. During the brief proceeding, Chief Detective Hammond remarked that it lias come to this pitch that we have got to put it- down.
