RIVAL FOOTBALL CLUB

ANNUAL BANQUET. On Saturday night, the Rival Football Club’s annual banquet was held in the social room at the Soldier’s Hall. The room and tables presented a gay scene, decorated in the Club’s colours, red and white. The Knock-out Shield, won by the Club for the 1931 season, was also on view. Mr It. Whiley, President of the Rival Club j presided over a gathering of about 40. During the evening Mr Arnold Perry (accompanied by Mr Lindsay at the piano) rendered several songs, Mr Coulson (recitation), anu Mr De Castro (piano selection). The Black Hand Orchestra, also contributed bright music in their usual capable style. The toast list was a lengthy one and the replies in most cases were marked by much good ,humour. The following toasts were honoured: The King, proposed by Mr R. Whiley. The 'Westland Sub-Unuion, proposed by Mr M. Houston senr. and responded to by Mr A. Cutbush. Kindred Clubs, proposed by Mr Whiley and responded to by J. King (Cobden), C. Preston (Excelsiors), and B. Adamson. (Kiwi). The Rival Club, proposed by Mr Coulson and responded to by Mr M. Houston junr. Kindred Sports, proposed by Mr R. Whiley and responded to by Mi 1 A. Lawn (swimming), Mr M. Houston tsen-r. (racing and trotting), Mr A. E. Dawson (tennis), Mr Pfahlert (cricket) , , Messrs H. Kortegast, „ B. Wyles and T. Stuart (golf), ,Mr R. Lynn (Kanieri Lake Boating Club), Mr Coulson (bowls), Mr Gooch (cycling). St. John’s Ambulance, proposed by Mr R. Lynn and responded to by Mr Pridinore.

The singing of Auld Lang Syne concluded a very pleasant evening.
