RAID BY DETECTIVES. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association) AUCKLAND, October 11. Fifteen men, including two Chinese, were arrested when ten detectives raided premises in the city last night. They will appear .in the Police Court to-morrow. One will be charged with keeping premises as a common gaining house, and one with assisting, and the others will be charged with being on the premises. No difficulty was experienced in ...nU: ng the arrests.- The police seized a quantity of paraphernalia, including cards and counters. "SIAN’S IMPOSITIONS. CHRISTCHURCH, October 10. . A labourer, George Anderson, aged fifty-five years, hit on the scheme yesterday of doing the rounds of a number of shops, ordering large quantities of goods, and on the strength of the order attempting to raise a small loan. These facts were stated by SeniorSergeant Fo\ in the Magistrate’s Court.

The Senior-Sergeant said that Anderson visited four separate shops and told the proprietors that he was giving a party. He gave large orders, and tried to borrow 8s 3d in each case, saying that he would return the money when he cai'led to collect the goods, At the shop «f a Mr East he ordered four boxes of chocolates, two pounds of bon bona, ten pounds of sweets and three shillings'' worth of penny lolly sticks: Anderson did not appear to be strong mentally, and had a long list of false pretences.
