ARREST UNDER ARMS
POLICE FIND HAUL OF GOODS. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association) AUCKLAND, October 11. * Three shots were tired by detect.ves this morning before they arrested two young men at a house at Ranui at the foot of the Waitakere Ranges. The arrests followed a two days’ chase by Detective B. Packman and Hayes and Constable Rushton, of Henderson, who were seeking for a brandnew bright red car, ‘which was stolen from the city. Several times they s’ghted it, but each time its super or speed enabled it to escape. Last night they went to a house at Ranui, and hid in a hedge until 1.30 o'clock on Saturday morning, when two men were seen creeping towards the hedge. When told to stop they bolted, and, after a challenge, three revolver shots were fired bv the detectives. One man dropped, while the other stood still. Both,, ol them then submitted to arrest.
The pair were handcuffed together, and the detectives then searched the house. They found a large quantity oi gelignite, defoliators, and d.ll electric battery with a hand-plunger for detonating charges. They also found a very large miscellaneous collection Of groceries, confectionery and o'ther goods, which made two carloads and two vanloads when being transported to the police station later. At the Po.fee Court later, two brothers, William Cole, aged 24, a mechanic ; and Bernard Charles Cole,
aged 26, were charged with steal ng n car, valued at £535. They were remanded for a week. Bail was refused. The police state that other charges are pending. It is understood that one ot the accused left the city with a detective latei to recover the stolen car, which is said to have been concealed under fern leaves .
