The death Is reported from Bah merston North, of one of its oldest inhabitants, Mrs Mary Elizabeth Whitmore, a former well known resident of Groymouth. A native of Leeds, Yorkshire, the deceased was 80 years of age. She leaves five daughters, Mrs V. Ha rvev. Mrs T. Ball, Mrs A. Cut]?r and Miss Whitmore (all of Palmerston North) ; and Mrs T. H. Hay (Sanson). There are 30 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

On Sunday last at Stillwater Mr E. Hales while making some adjustments to his motor lorry, had the rear wheels jacked up, and the engines running, with the lorry in gear. As he wa,s bending over near one of the revolving wheels, part of his clothing was caught in the wheel and he was hurled violent, ly against the side of the vehicle. He called for help, but before,the engine could be stopped, almost all bis cloth-ing-had been torn off him.

Air Victor Wright, a miner employed at Dobson, was last night missing,, and a search failed to reveal lifs whereabouts. He was last seen shortly after 9 o’clock yesterday morning. The fact that he was ant to he affected by fits caused apprehension when he had failed to return to his home last evening. He is a married man with four children. On learning of his disappearance a numerous party of men, led by Con,stable Rodgers and Mr W. Purdy, made a search along the bank of the Grey River as far ns Stillwater, it being thought that he might have been 'engaged,, fishing and met with some mishap. After 10 p.m. the searchers returned without finding any trace of the missing man, whose height is about sft. 11 ins. He was wearing a black hat. a rain coat and white sand-shoes. It is requested that any person who since yesterday morning may have seen or hoard anything of the missing man will at once communicate with the police, or with Mr W. Purdy, Secretary of the Grey Valley Miners’ Union. —Argus.

While returning from Rangitata on Sunday evening, a car driven, by Mr L. R. Woodham, of Temuka, capsized on McgDonald’s bridge, and fell to the riverbed below. The bridge where the accident occurred has a. bad approach, and Air Woodham had nearly reached the end of the bridge when a front tyre blew out, causing the car to skid, and crash through the railings of the bridge. The car landed in the bed of the river, and luckily neither the driver nor a. passenger was hurt.

An unusual accident with a surprising effect occurred in South Dunedin the other day, when a boy cyclist riding with his head down crashed into the rear of a stationary sedan motorcar. The front wheel of the cycle struck the rear bumper of the ear, and the boy was thrown head-foremost against the sedan top. While the boy’s injuries were much less severe than might, have been expected, the effect on the. car was surprising, the panelling being so badly dented that the repairing of the damage will probably prove an expensive matter.

The change of the seat of government of New Zealand from Auckland to Wellington by the decision of throe Australian Commissioners w'as announced 67 years ago last Saturday, on October 3rd., 1864. The Gommissioner.s had been specially appointed by the Governors of Australia and Tasmania to determine to-which part of Cook Strait the capital of the colony should he removed. The decision in favour of ’Wellington took effect from the beginning of the following year. The case for transfer was so strong that Auckland opposition at first aroused speedily disappeared.

The annual sale of work ill aid of the funds of St. Andrew’s Church took place yesterday afternoon and evening at St.’ Andrew’s Hall. The members of the Guild had been busy for months past and the result was to be seen by tile very large quantity of useful articles that filled the stalls, and they were marked at prices that resulted in a great clearance being made. In addition' to the various loaded stalls there was a fine display of spring flowers that were the subject of general admiration. An afternoon tea room was attractively laid out and patrons were well satisfied with tlie viands and the attention given by a hevv of young ladies. Various competitions helped to pass away the time pleasantly and the gathering proved another very satisfying success, the financial result being very pleasing to the management.

The Soldiers’ Hall last evening presented a very* gay appearance when the iMilitary Ball took place. The function was a distinct success, a very large number of young people being present who enjoyed to the utmost the good times 'provided for them. The Lucky Spot One Stop was won by Mr H. Preston and his partner, Mrs A. Thompson. The Lucky Monte Carlo Military 2 Step was won by Mir J. Walker and partner, Mess D. McWhirter. Mr C. Bleach had charge of the floor and was ably assisted by Mr Groufsky. The Black Hand Orchestra provided capital music while extras were very much appreciated from Misses Evans, Lynn and iStopforth and Mr De Castro. A sumptuous supper was provided under the able managership of Mrs T. A. Stuart and a band of willing workers. Many members of the force attended in their uniforms which lent colour to tbe occasion. Altogether the Ball was voted one of the best held this season.
