The gas cooking demonstrations for the present season were concluded yesterday at the Soldiers’ Hall, when a social gathering was held at which those attending, during the season were entertained at afternoon tea. A competition was held, which "as won by Miss S. Keller. Songs were rendered by Mbs Stapleton Mrs L. Stopforth, Mrs Harrison and a recitation was given by Miss N. Wormiugton. Afternoon tea was banded round. At the conclusion Mrs Parkhill returned thanks to Mi’s Heinz for the able manner in which she had carried out the demonstration lessons during the year. A pleasant gathering concluded by the singing of ‘‘He s a Jelly -Cood Fellow”, Auld Lang Syne and the National Anthem.

Freight railed through the Otira tunnel for the week ended Saturday, October 3, amounted to 8,899 tons. For the corresponding week last year the total was 9,945 tons, and in 1929, 12,658 tons.
The death took place at her late residence, Ikamatua, on Monday evening, of Mrs Margaret Jane (Jean) McInroe. The deceased had been ailing for solne considerable time, She was a native of Oxford, Canterbury, and ■ prior to settling ill Ikamatua, was egaged as a school-teacher in various schools or the West Coast. She i survived by her husband , Air Arthur Mclnroe, and by one brother, Air 3. Ilorrick, Te Ivinga.
There was a very heavy downpour last night. Rain began to fall about 6 o’clock and continued for over ten hours almost wi hunt intermission. The rain stopped about daybreak, and though cloudy it is line. For the period of 24 hours to 9 a.m. to-day the rainfall was 3.28 inches (covered by about- ten hours rain) showing it was solid while it lasted. The river is in light flood this morning,, and there is a heavy sea running.
