NEW PAY RATES. LONDON, October 4. Admiralty fleet orders notifying new rates of pay from Ist. October contain provisions for consideration of married men under the age of 25. The Admiralty is approaching hire purchase firms and insurance eompanys with a~ view to preventing hardship to the men generaly.
INDOOR BOWLS. Although indoor bowls has been a popular winter pastime in Auckland tor a considerable time, and claims over 6000 devotees, it ha s only recently made its appearance in Wellington, says the “Dominion.” It has, however, “caught on” to an extent that indicates marked development before next winter. The jack is about the same size as the one used on the howling green, hut the howl only weighs about ljlb., a third of the weight of the green howl. The game is played on a baize mat 22ft. by 6ft. The rules are very similar to those of ordinary bowls. In the scoring, however, No. 2. No. 3. and the skip are penalised one. two and three points respectively if they drive the jack off the mat. i Seven heads are played for rinks and pairs, and 11 for singles. I
