A.J.C, MEETING. SYDNEY, October 4. The spring meeting of the A.J.C. opened at Randwick on Saturday in tljdl showery weather. The attendance was forty thousand. The track was in I excellent condition. The New Zealand- j ers enjoyed a royal day, annexing the, t'-o richest races of the day. Tbe exNew Zealand jockey, M. McOarten, was successful in each race. Ammon Ra proved himself the out- j standing three-vear-old of the season, winning the Derby in smart fashion. Running prominently throughout, he had the race in his keeping half a mile from home. A- to”Oy gave a sterling performanc e in the Epsom Handicap, running to the 1 front seen after the barrier rose, and i ho was never headed. Ticino issued a ’ rtroug challenge in the straight, but !Autopay, finishing in bulldog fashion, prevailed hv a neck. Results:— Hurdles.- —Gadray 1, Port Risk 2, D inner Bay 3. Ten started. lowing. Half a mile from home, Ammon 11a ran to the front. From thence onward the race was never in doubt. Tho winner passed tile post with two lengths to spare. Time 2.3-IJ. EPSOM HANDICAP. AUTOPAY 8.6 (UcCarten) 1 Ticino 5.4 (Munro) 2 Pentheus 9.0 (Pike) 3 There were 22 starters. Pentheus was favourite. Autopav was the first to show out from Hava spot, Ticino, Pentheus and Gesture. Passing the half mile, Autopav was two lengths clear of Ticino, Pentheus, Havaspot and Nut Cup. Autopav turned for home a length clear of Ticino, I’entlieus, Trennette, Gesture, Burraeoorboo. Stalling off a desperate challenge from Ticino, Autopav gained the victory by a neck, 'lime 1.37. SPRING STAKES. PITAR LAP 9.2 (Pike) 1 Chide 9.3 (Cook) 2 The Dimmer 9.3 (Bartlo) 3 The other starters were: —First Acre, Concentrate. Loquacious. Carry On. First Acre led into the straight. Rliur Lap raced away passing tho distance, and won with ease by two lengths. Time 2.333. Kensington Handicap.— First Division.—Panola 1, Mr Kerry 2, Frontier 3. There were 15 starters. Won by two lengths. Time 1.26).
Kensington Handicap: Second Division.—Dermid 1, Chemois 2, Killnfiney 3. There were 14 starters, Dermid dial, longed Chemois, and after a sharp struggle, went on to win by a length and a-lialf. Time 1.26.
NOTES ON RANWICK RUNNING. SYDNEY, October -1. The 'ex-New Zealander, Banner Buy, was by no means disgraced in the hurdles. Good judges express the opinion that he should turn out a profitable purchase for G. Nailon. Ammon Ra will he th c last gelding to win the classic Derby, owing to tinnew rule which debars an unsexecl horse from competing. Ammon lla’s winnings are now in the vicinity yi £20,C00. He is described here as a brilliant horse.
McCarten, the rider of Autopay in the Epsom Handicap, said: “I was instructed to go out and break up the field. Autopay was flat out for five furlongs, when I gave him a bit of a breather. He stuck particularly well when Ticino came at him, and I was well pleased with the way Autopav liung on.”
I Pike, the rider of Pentheus, said: I “My mount was simply not good j enough.” ChideV effort in the Spring Stakes won him a host of admirers frtr tho Metropolitan Handicap, for which 1m Vejjpiond iiu 4 4iyouritjs;n.
Chide returned to its best New Zealand foi-m, and stuck to Phav Lap like n champion. In this race Concentrate raced without any dash. The New Zealander Love Song 1 changed hands prior to the Epsom Handicap, the new owner being Mr J. O’Brien, who bought him subject to the usual stipulation that if he ran into a place tlie sale would become void.
Mr Jefford leaves for New Zealand as soon as Cypress is fit to travel.
FLEMINGTON RESULTS. MELBOURNE, October 4. The Victoria Racing Chib’s meeting was held yesterday at Fleinington in pouring rain. Royal Barb won the Stand Handicap at Fleinington yesterday in great style from Prince Dayton. Wap illy I was third.
