NEW TYPE OF TRAWLER

LAUNCH OF THE ANNAMELLA. A fine new type of trawler was launched from the boat-building yards oi Messrs Miller and Tannage at Port Chalmers on Saturday afternoon. The new vessel, which is named Annabella, was designed and built to the order of Mr G. Seandrett, of Westport. She is a powerful and striking looking craft. Her dimensions are: Length, 4b ft. over all; beam, lift bin ; draught, 4ft forward and 6ft aft. Her- design conforms with the straight stem, counter stern, flush deck, with bulwark and forecastle head type: This type is not attractive in appearance, but complies with such requirements as handiness and seaworthiness. The propelling machinery consists of a- semi-Die-siel crude oil engine of 36 horse power, capable of giving a speed of over 10 knots. The boat- is fitted with a M'Gregor pub nt propeller, which, when thrown out of action, will not impede the progress of the ship while under sail. Accommodation is provided for four persons in the cabin aft. There is a for’ard hatch, a fish hatch, and a hatch aft. A boat will he carried on the davits, but this will be taken inboard during heavv weather. The hull is sheathed on the starboard side in order to prevent any damage being done to the vessel when heavy trawls are being lifted. The Annabella is electrically lighted throughout from 11 points, which are connected with ft battery off the engine. The cabins are elaborately furnished, each being fitted with a Dover stove, sink, extension table, and all other conveniences, The trawler has been built with the object of carrying passengers if necessary. She has a carrying capacity of 240 gallons of crude oil, sufficient for the ship being sea for a week. These supplies will be taken on board by hose through the deck. As stated, the Annabella is of the flush deck type, except for th e foc’sie head, which extends from the bow about 16 feet, and will be railed by brass stanchions with wire through the eyes to prevent any person falling overboard. The bulwarks are raised 20 inches from the deck, the rail and belting being of jarrali. The boat is fitted with elaborate portholes. The wheelhouse will accommodate six or eight persons. The hull is built of kauri, the ribs of hardwood, and also the keel. The Annabella has been specially built to withstand very heavy seas. The accommodation provides for all the elements of comfort now considered necessary in the modern equipment of sea-going vessels of the trawler class. The auxiliary machinery simplifies the' handling of trawls and the like. She will carry 90 gallons of fresh water, and the supply for the galley will be drawn from the tanks by the rotary pump system.
