The death occurred suddenly last night, at the residence of her sister, Mrs J. Brown, Preston Road, Greymouth, of Mrs Mary Ellizabeth Sunderland. The deceased who was the eldest daughter of the late Captain McPherson leaves one sister Mrs J. Brown, and one brother, Mr AA r . McPherson.
A company is interested in a scheme of gold dredging in the Alatakitak Stiver, near the Murchison township. In addition a huge earthquake slip near Murchison was found to have four payable minerals in it, A lode of sdver was traced half a mile and the sl'p was also found to contain gold. On Monday afternoon, two men from Lyell wore pleased to meet three Stockton and Millerton men, Mr C. Barnes ((Stockton), and Mr J. Blah - and Mr E. Jones (Millerton), who were up the Xgakawau river prospecting, when they came across Messrs McKay and Hart i(Lyell), who Imd been prospecting and lost their track on Friday in the foggy weather. They had been practically without food since Friday. Barnes and party took McKay and Hart to a camp they have on the hills, and gave them i feed.

When writing to a friend in her home city, an Invercargill girl, who :s visiting Australia, gave a vivid description of the conditions existing in ■Sydney. “The girls sleep on the seats just like men do,” she wrote. “It makes one shudder even in the day time to pass down the park where the dead-beats slept at night, wrapped up in newspapers. Beggars everywhere! People are selling matches or anything to make a little money and some people are singing in the streets. Pavement artists and people selling novelties. I don’t mind people trying to sell things, but it’s horrible to see the beggars. v

All unprecedented incident in the natural history of the Auckland Domain i» the nesting of a wild black swan, Recently the swan went to the pond near the tea kiosk, and there settled so definitely as to build for herself a nest on one of the small islands, and lay four eggs. The nest is made from pieces of foliage ot a Norfolk -Island pine, a few feathers, pieces of moss, and lengths ol raupo. Like the mute swan of Great Britain, the black variety : (which is a nat:ve of Australia) resents the presence of human beings near its nest. Cases in which the arm of a full grown man had been broken bv a flap of the wing of a nesting swan are not unknown in other parts of the world.

A man who was thrown from his horse while crossing the Tairua Rivei, in the Coromandel district, underwent a painful ordeal before he was admitted to the Thames Hospital the followin'' - afternoon. The victim of the accident was Mr Stanley J. Morrison. He was dragged four chains through the creek and along a road with his left leg caught in one of the saddle hooks. Then lie managed to stop the horse by seizing its front legs. Undoing the girth and breastplate, he managed to make the saddle slide and fall to the ground. He' then freed the hook from his leg and crawled about ten chains to a Maori encampment, where he received first-aid treatment. He was sent home on a lorry, but it was found that his injuries needed immediate hospital treatment, A paity of stretcher-bearers was organised to carry him to Puriri, as the road from Hiku,ai to Puriri is impassably -fon any wheel traffic. There were about 21 residents and workers in the stretcher party, which reached Puriri on Thursday afternoon. From there lie was taken to the hospital in an ambulance.
