ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. (By Telegraph —Per Press Association) WANGANUI, September, <3O. William Mitchell, accountant of the City Council, was charged this morning with attempted suicide yesterday. He was remanded in custody till Saturday. OBITUARY. PAHIATUA, September 30. Obituary.—Henry Cowan, aged 77, managing director of Tui Brewery Ltd. Mangatainok. ,He died at Auckland, where he was taken seriously ill. He was a generous supporter of many local institutions. ' ANOTHER BESETTING CHARGE. CHRISTCHURCH, September 30. Leonard James Rosevear, 39, married, the third man arrested as a sequel to picketing at the Gardens, was charged to-day with besetting persons with a view to compelling them to abstain from work, and was remanded till Thursday on bail of £IOO. A BANKRUPTCY. CHRISTCHURCH, September 30. Attributing Ins bankruptcy to lackof capital-, high overhead charges, and -hotel business depression 100 per cent., Frederick Roughen Patterson, formerly hotel keeper in Wellington, Palmerston North, and Christchurch, now working iis : a barman met his creditors to-day with a defineiency shown as £2,500; Suggestions Were made that bankrupt without making his position known had been carrying oil credit business in Christchurch while he had big commitments in the North Island. Questioned, bankrupt said he did hot think the firms here would have given him credit had they known his position.

COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. DUNEDIN, September 30. Ivor Gannon, police constable, charged with the theft of a gent’s bicycle, valued at £4 sterling, pleaded not guilty, fcfte reserved his defence and was committed for trial. Bail was allowed. THEFT CHARGE. WELLINGTON, September 30. On each of 2 charges of stealing cheques for different sums, Leonard Joseph Dalton, formerly in the Public Trust ’ was sentenced to two years by Mr Justice McGregor in the Supreme Court. The Criwu Proesecutor said the prisoner was formerly assistant district public trustee, a trusted officer, and received a salary just under five hundred a year. He had special duties assigned to him, arising out of .the liquidation of the New Zealand Times company and ac-
cording to his statement had gambled with the money taken. The .Judge said Dalton -stated he stole the money in order .to pay back debts to money lenders a.nd used it to gam Fie on racehorses in a vain effort to get more money.
