On each of 2 charges of stealing cheques for different sums, Leonard Joseph Dalton, formerly in the Public Trust ’ was sentenced to two years by Mr Justice McGregor in the Supreme Court. The Criwu Proesecutor said the prisoner was formerly assistant district public trustee, a trusted officer, and received a salary just under five hundred a year. He had special duties assigned to him, arising out of .the liquidation of the New Zealand Times company and ac-

cording to his statement had gambled with the money taken. The .Judge said Dalton -stated he stole the money in order .to pay back debts to money lenders a.nd used it to gam Fie on racehorses in a vain effort to get more money.
