The Rev. William Constable, one of the most eloqueftt of Auckland’s speakers, will be the lecturer during lYA’s Ihterf national Programme this evening, 'taking as his subject “Tbe Spirit of Ancient Greece.’’ Air‘ Constable will deal with the glories of Ancient Greece and its influence’ on the present day.
Featured on 2YA’s programme will be Madame Margaret Mercer (contralto) of Dahnevirke. The popular Melodic Four will be heard in solos and in such quartettes as “My Cairo Love,” “Wan-, gaihiii Moon,” “Sweet Jenny Lee” and •‘An Evening Pastoral.” The Salon Orchestra will play the suite “L’Arlesienne,” “Southern 'Nights," “Love’s Garden,” “Four Trifles,” “Folk Tune and Fiddle Dance” and , the latest dance novelties. Selected electrical recordings will be included in the programme. The Dunedin Tramways Band, under ■Mr Chas. A. Morgan, will provide an attractive programme for 4YA. The assisting vocalists will be Miss Estelle Burnard (soprano), Miss Helen Roy (contralto) and Mr J., A. Sligo (baritone), | ivith humorous elocutionary, items "(selections froni “Pickwick Papers”) by Mr 1 D. E. Dali. Bandsman Reader will play a cornet solo and Mrs C Drake a pianoforte solo. Silent day at 3YA. ; ...—___—.... : , ■ < WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 23rd. The IYA programme this evening, is being provided by the New Zealand League of Pen women. Many of the items ~to be given have also been composed by members of the League. | Dr Guy H. Scholefield,, 0.8. E., will speak on an international topic 1 at 2YA. -A, fine vocal programme will be presented by 3YA., Soprano solos by Miss Gladys Brooks will be; “Oh, Had A jubal’s Lyre,” “Songs My Mother Taught •Me” and “II Bacio.” Miss Millicent Jennings will sing “Hayfields and .Butterflies” (by Del Riego) and two pretty songs by Chaminade. ,Mr., Philip .Wypne ,Yorke, a baritone, will, make his first appearance at 3YA. singing solos, and he will be heard with Miss Jennings in a number of duets. Miss ; Eileen Hughson, a clever young pianiste, will play two solos, one being. Debussy’s “Submerged Cathedral.V Aecolay’s “Concerto” will be played by Miss . Thelma Cusack, violiniste, with orchestral accompaniment. , Selections from “The Nutcracker Suite” and ;“Cavalleria Rusticana” will, be played by the Studio Octet, under Mr Harold; Beck. From 3YA, at 9 o’clock, Mr George •Armstrong, for 28 years mayor of Akaroa,* will speak oil “Akaroa—Yesterday and To-day.” . 4YA.„w,iIJ. feature this evening, Balfe’s •very 'popular opera “The Bohemian Girl,” to be presented by Mr John T. Leech's Minnesingers. A very strong cast hasbeen chosen and the various excerpts will be sung to orchestral accompaniment and a chorus of 80 voices. The soloists will be : Miss Anne White, Miss Noni Davidson, Miss Maude Kenward, Mr F. Mortley Peake, Mr Wm. Ruff ell, Mr T. D. White, Mr James -Simpson, Mr James Ferguson and Mr John T. Leech.
