FIENDISH MURDER

OF SYDNEY WOMAN. (Australian Press Association.) SYDNEY, September 21. A middle-aged, unidentified woman, whose head was terribly battered with one ear severed, was found uead upon a bed in the basement of city residential chambers. Her small terrier dog was dead, with its head smashed. The police express the opinion that the woman was murdered in a fiendish manner probably while asleep overnight. YOUNG GIRL THE VICTIM. (Received this day at 9.25 a.m) SYDNEY, September 22. The basement murder victim is not middle-aged but is a mere girl between 16 and 18. Her features are so disfigured by her injuries that it led to a wrong impression of her.age. The police believe sbe is named Gilligan. She had resided with a woman who rented the flat, whose whereabouts are being sought.

(Received this day at 10.15 a.ra.) SYDNEY, September 22. Tt is repealed that a telegram received by Mr W. A. Holman K.C. who has chambers in the building where the body of Marjorie Gilligan, aged

fifteen, was found, led to the discovery of the crime. The telegram was ostensibly from Mrs Bryce, aunt of the girl, who cannot be located.

The .police last night discovered a

woman’s body on the water’s edge at Cronrulla, Beach. Detectives believe the woman who apparently committed suicide, may be identical "'th t*ie one for whom they are searching in connection with the murder.
