“A CLOSE SHAVE."
LORRY ON LEVEL CROSSING. AUCKLAND, September 17. “He had a very close shave,” remarked Mr F. H. Levien, S.M., in the Pukekohe Court yesterday, when fining Thomas Allen Peterson, a carrier, operating between Auckland and Tuakau, for passing over the George Street level crossing at Tuakau when the line was not clear. The offence was admitted by defendant in a statement. He said a clear view of the crossing wa s obstructed by railway workers’ huts. Having n load of three tons on his truck he considered it better to proceed than to stop. Sergeant J. T. Cowan said that the Limited express from Wellington to Auckland was approaching nt the time and the wig-wag signal was operating and the bell ringing. Constable Maiden said the signals referred to were often erratic. Sometimes the bell rang all day. Mr Levien imposed a fine of 30s and 10s costs.
