SLUMP IN MARRIAGES. United Press Association.—By Electrn Telegraph.—Copyright. | LONDON, September 19. Extra taxation has caused a wholesale cancellation of marriages. In London and in the provinces more than one hundred have asked the Registrars to return the license fee. A London Registrar states that bridegrooms .in a good position are not marrying, because they think it is unfair to the brides. -;?•=■ i TEACHERS’ STRIKE. ’ LONDON, September 18. The trouble in the Navy has hardly settled before the teachers have fired the first shot of the campaign against the cuts in salaries. At thirty South West London Schools today the teachers stopped all athletics and games outside school hours. Over seven thousand children are affected. The “Evening News” says: As a further measure of economy, the Army Council has conceited all the regular army field training manoeuvres for a year. THE DOLE DEFICIT. LONDON, September 19. In the House of Commons, Sir H. Betterton (Conservative) said tlmt if the present rate of benefits and con ■ tributions was continued, it was estimated that by March Ist next the deficiency in the Unemployment Insurance Fund would be 130 millions and if they continued in the same way for 1 a further year the deficiency would be 190 millions.
ELECTION QUESTION. ; LONDON, September 19.
No decision on the general election question can be expected until next week.
The Prime Minister, Mr MacDonald, is reported to be making up his mind in the quiet cf Chequers Court during the week-end, and he will probably announce his own conclusion to the Cabinet on Monday.
WHAT WILL PREMIER DO? LONDON, September 19. The whole press takes it for granted that whenever the'general electon campaign comes, Mr MacDonald will take the lead as National Prime but in some quarters it is suggested that he instead, will probably go to Washington as Minister to make room for Mr Baldwin. PRESS COMMENT. (Received , this dev at 9.25 a.ml LONDON, September 20. The “Sunday Chronicle” says: If the election is successful Mr MacDonald will lead the Cabinet of a big five. The others will be Messrs Baldwin, Neville, Chamberlain, Thomas, and Simon.
