FIRE IN CUPBOARD

OUTBREAK AT OFFICE OF ANDREWS AND BEATEN. CHRISTCHURCH, September 5. Spontaneous combustion in the cupboard is attributed as the cause of a fire which broke out in the office of Messrs Andrews and Beaven, engineers, on the corner of Moorhonse Avenue and Madras Street, at 10.13 last evening. The fire started in a cupboard, containing books and papers, underneath a staircase at the hack of the office, and quickly spread. The constable on beat duty in Moorhouse Avenue noticed the outbreak.and gave the alarm. The Central Fire Brigade arrived in time to stop the flames spreading to the adjoining ground-floor rooms icid the upper storey, but the office and its contents were considerably damaged by smoke and water. The stairway was burnt through, and the flames had reached the top of it when they were extinguished.
