ST. Wifi STI)ART CtlP; The concluding debate for the Stuart Cup took place at. Ste Mary’s Club i Rooms last evening, when there was a large audience to .hear the final contest. • As the two teams, St. Mary’s and St. Goluniba had each recorded wins, there was extra, keenness as to whom would be victors. r v • Re v. ’ Father "McKay ’: welcpmed the visitors. . - He stressed the importance of the debate and " wished the contestants good luck. ,'; , ’ • : ; Rev. Kempton., The judge before; giving: Kis decision congratulated.reach' speaker on' his performance and ;! said. that they all treated, the subject 1 well.' .He gave some very use-ul hints, urging the speakers alway«—tp-*.uBQ”-;6implo * guage when speaking so that hia audience: will always; follow and under, stud him. He stressed the necessity of having subject matter - somewhat memorised and so 'obviate -the use of . reference to notes which always takes points from the speaker. Both teams had done very well but One was slightly better. Rev. ; speaker’s remarks were much appreciated and with the' little touches of humour .introduced the proceeding were very jovial. Brother ~ Egbert and •aid his opinions in every way coincided with those of thp judge. Rev. Father Holohan, on behalf of St. Columba returned thanks. He congratulated St. Mary’s and hoped for a further friendly debate before the season closed. The leader of St. Columba, Mr M. Kelly then presented the; Stewart Cup to Mr J. Stopforth, leader of St. Mary’s and in doing so extended his team’s congratulations. Mr Stopforth replie'd. : ’' 7 Rev. Father; McKay' said he was ‘ very pleased with St; Mary’s success. The Hokitika team had given a good deal of time to the debate and had worked hard. in preparation. • He congratulated St* Columba; on their work and returned thanks to all concerned with the evening's entertainment.
