LABOUR CONFIDENCE

IN FACING ELECTORS

[United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. I

LONDON,

September 15

None of the other papers confirm the “Daily Herald’s” forecast of an almost immediate dissolution.

Nevertheless, the “Daily Herald” takes the repott seriously, enough to devofe a leading article to Labour’s election programme. Though it uses some familiar anti-protection arguments, the “Her.ald” cannot be said definitely to adhere to free trade. It says: “The ramshackle' coalition is not really ambitious to fight now, but it is terrified at the prospect of fighting later. The Tories seek to evade the electors’ judgment by plundering the poorest class at the dictation o. the bankers, and by promising tariffs as a cure for the unemployment, though tariff-ridden Germany and the tariff-ridden United States are staggering under their unemployment. Labour will enter the fight here confidently, and will seek power to remedy these newest injustices, and to deaf with the finances on the basis of genuine equality of sacrifice, and also to overhaul .the present antiquated and inefficient banking system, which is largely responsible for the present trouble.” anticipations of a tariff. LONDON, September 14. The Cabinet Committee' on the Trade Balance is expected to report within a fortnight. Several of the Conservative organs interpret this committee as bringing nearer- the imposition of tariffs, even by the present Government. Sir John Simon is stated to be the latest convert to the inevitability of import duties. It is expected that many Liberals are willing to accept import duties i they are reported to be necessary bv this committee. The “Daily Express” says that unusually heavy cargoes of foreign manufacturers are being rushed to Britain in order to evade any duties that may be imposed.
