James Barrie, in unveiling a lifesize statue of Thomas Hardy a't Dorchester subscribed by lovers of . the novelist throughout the world revealed that when Hardy .was born, the doctor, thinking him dead, dropped him into a basket where a woman found him alive. Sir James added, whimsically ; “I wonder whether Hardy was shaming because he did not like the first-glimpse of life. If so it was the only time he shammed throughout his long life.”
