FOOTBALL
Commenting on Saturday’s game for the Seddon Shield the Westport News says: In the first half,' Coast had the benefit of a strong wind and Buller had the disadvantage of playing with the sun in their eyes and consequently when' half time sounded, with Buller leading by 6 to 3, the public thought that the visitors would be well beaten in th£ last part of the game, but the Coasters played good football against the .sun and the wind, and close to the finish were often dangerous.
Lindbom played a fair game at full back but his kicking was weak, Jamieson and 'Martyn were always dangerous on the Coast wings but the former met a solid tackier in Connelly who grassed his man every time. Martyn’s try was a good effort and he was a great help to his side with his' line kicking.
Fong was one of the best of the visiting backs and he played a great game both on attack and defence. Of the five-eighths, Hughes appealed more than King but neither man showed up in any brilliant movements. To Davidson must go the honour of being tfie best back on the ground and his display stamps him as one who has a great future in the rugby world. The Coast forwards packed well in the scrums and they were the strongest forward team that Buller has played this season. Frank Bell, the wing forward was outstanding and his tackling and fast following up was one of the features of the game. He made, a great effort when he broke, away with Martyn iu a passing rush which resulted in the latter scoring a try.
J. Bell, Jones and Freitas were the pick of the rest and the latter played a much better game than when last in Westport. Freitas, the big West Coast forward, who, on Saturday played one of the best games of his career, announced his retirement from rugby on Saturday and made a presentation of his boots to another player. The many admirers of his sterling football, played in a thoroughly sporting sp'rit, w'll hope to see him out in a new pair next year, leading the Coast forwards on to victory.
