EARTHQUAKES
OFFICIAL REPORTS. WELLINGTON, September 12; ■} The Secretary of the General Post . Office (Mr G.-McNamara) advises that 1 the following earthquake reports have been received. Postmaster, Hastings: Severe earthquake 9.53 a.m. No damage reported. Postmaster, Porangahau: Heavy prolonged .shock earthquake felt here 9.55 a.m. No damage reported, oi Postmaster, Fending: Sharp shock earthquake felt here 9.55 la.m. Direction approximately/north to south. Chief Postmaster, Kapier: < Fairly severe earthquake with long swaying motion at 9.53. No local damages yet -3 reported. ■ ’ s SLIGHT QUAKES. Several earthquake shocks, including a very minor 'one in Wellington at 4.43 a.m. on Thursday, have been felt at various parts of the North Island, during the last day or two. From the seismograph records Thursday morning’s tremor in Wellington Was apparently of local origin, and it was ! ported that residents in Karori beards - a rumbling noise* 'A short sharp eai th-> quake shock 'was felt at Masterton ftt valmost exactly the same time. Shocksof greater of less intensity were felt on Wednesday at Wanganui, I)anne- i virke, Napier;.- Thames and Wnihi; ' . Whakatane had sik shakes _in the ' y early hours of Sunday - morning - last week, hut no record was obtained of . Lv these on the instruments- at Kelhurn, and it was concluded that the disturb bances had been local and only slight. CHRISTCHURCH, September 12, '■ Three distinct earthquake shocks were recorded at the Christchurch Observatory to-daj\ The first and most severe occurred at 9.54 a.m., describ- . ed as “quite a substantial shock, but nothing like a dangerous quake.” ..The. ■ centre of the disturbance appeared to be -in the Hawkes Bay district. The shock was spread over ten minutes. , Two other lesser shocks were recorded j-.y----slight only and lasting a few seconds*- >. the first just before midday and the second just after. ■ ' / 1
