HOKITIKA HARBOB BOARD
THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 10. The Board held its monthly meeting at 4.30 p.m. Present: —Messrs M. H. Houstop (Chairman), E. W. Heenan, D. Stuart, J. J. Mclntosh and N. Warren. The minutes were confirmed and outward correspondence appioved. INWARD COF.REbPONDcNCE. The Secretary reported that since last meeting the Sub-Committee had invited tenders for timber for the wharf and had accepted the tender ol Butler Bros. Ltd., at 10/3 per 100 ft. Four other tenders were received. In connection with • some rentals of timber stacking stands the Secretary was instructed not to allow the removal of timber stacked thereon until the rentals due had been paid. From Diggers Sawmill Coy., notifying discontinuance of rental of stand room.—Received and accepted. From Renton and Co., in reference to wharfage charges on cement; asking for a reduction from 4s to 2s per ton. Received. In answer to an enquiry the Secretary stated that the Shipping Company paid the wharfages which was included in the freight charge, and which including cement was 4s per ton. The general freight charge was 40/6, and on cement 30/-. That any reduction made would be of benefit to the Shipping Company. Mr Heonan moved ‘that the wharfage on cement be reduced to 3s per ton. Seconded by Mr Mclntosh. Mr Stuart moved an amendment that the charge be 2/6, Seconded by Mr Warren. The amendment was lost and the motion enrrid.
From District Engineer of Railways Greymoutli, replying to a request by the Board in connection with repairs to the Hokitika railway bridge, that an endeavour he made, to direct the stream through the larger spang of the bridge, and stating that where stone had been placed in the river was at the place where a heavy scour had been taking place and that there was no intention of 'attempting to deviate the course of the stream, owing to the heavy expense that would be involved. —Received.
From Westland County Council agreeing to request for Overseer Millner to be allowed to report on the probable cost of a deviation of the river to the north bank scheme.—Received. The Secretary stated the report had not yet come to hand. Mr Heenan stated lie understood that the report was ready, and Mr Millncr was waiting to procure an estimate ofThe cost of a number of piles that his scheme would include.
The Harbourmaster reported that the flood the previous day had considerably , improved the, bay, anfl tlpit the channel was now in very satisfactory order.—Received.
Accounts 'amounting to £582/8/4 were passed for payment, The Secretary reported that the cogt of work under the Unemployed scheme carried out by the Board had amounted to £Bl7/10/3, of which £596/12/9 had been found by the Unemployment Board and £224/17/6 had been the cost of supplies provided by the Board. The total payment by the Unemployment Board were £523/10 and the cost to the Harbour Board £294/0/3.
The question of completing the work in hand was discussed, and left to the Chairman, Messrs Heenan and Mclntosh to arrange. Some necessary work to strengthen the under-lntcture of the lt'-w wharf by iron ties mis authorised. The Board rose at 5.20 p m.
