Following on the assertion of the United States Secretary for Labour Mr Boak, ’“that several of our socalled outstanding citizens will soon be arrested,” the local Federal Authorities have revealed that nineteen per sons, including a lawyer, and three Government clerks, have been apprehended in connection with alleged smuggling operations of considerable proportions whereby some eight thousand European aliens have been brought into the United States over the Canadian border. The authorities have declined to reveal the full particulars, but the charges suggest that the smugglers proceeded to blackmail those smuggled with 'threats of deportation if they refused to pay additional revenue to the members of the rings. Further arrests are expected directly. Several Canadians are believed ;,i be also involved.
