FINANCIAL SITUATION
KING FAVOURS ECONOMY. [United Press Association—By Eleotrw Telegraph—Copyright. ] (Received this day at noon.) LONDON, September 7. His Majesty commanded Sdr F. Ponsonby to thus write to Mr MacDonald: ‘‘ln the grave financial situation confronting the country His Majesty desires personally to participate in the movement for the reduction of national expenditure and has decided His Majesty’s civil list be reduced by fifty thousand, sterling while the emergency lasts. When after the War, owing to the increased cost of living, and the fall in the purchasing power of money, the civil list, which was settled in 1910, was found to be inedequate and drastic enonomies were made. Therefore it is not easy to reduce the civil list further without sacrificing some State functions traditionally associated with the Monarchy. Without ■ throwing numbers of His Majesty’s servants out of work, after careful consideration, however, the King arrived at the conclusion that with tire exercise of most rigid economy, it should he possible to reduce the civil list by.£50,000. The Queen a rift other members of the Royal. Family in receipt of Parliamentary grants are all desirious that reducing thereof should lie made during the national crisis. Mr MacDonald replied : “His Majesty’s contributions in war time and the difficult years succeeding are at present in th€'minds of his subjects, ancFit will be with profound regret to them all that the circumstances, are such as to lead His Majesty and other members of the Royal Family to wish to add to them, but whenever his subjects are called on to share the heavy burden it has been characteristic of His Majesty to lead the way. Now when all must join the common sacrifice they will be heartened by His Majesty’s example and the knowledge in making their own contribution that the lead was given them by the King in person and that ihcii Majesties are with them. I ask you on behalf of his subjects to tender their sincerest thanks to His .Majesty’s action and to other members of the Royal Family.”
