SECONDARY HIGHWAYS REPORT

Overseer Millner reported as follows : 1

I have the honour to report upon the progress, of work on the Secondary Highways during the month of August. LAKE KANIERI ROAD. Repairs were effected to motor worn holeß and necessary places, including approaches to bridges, over a distance of five, miles absorbing 65 cubic yards of gravel. Watertables were cleaned and reopened a distance of 18 chains in short sections, extending from the western slope of Crayfish Creek to tfie eastern slope of Coal Ci;eek. Drains were reopened for 925 links in length on tlje southern side of the road beyond the eastern bank of Boucher’s Creek Defective decking consisting of 4/16 3/12x1/10 feet by Bx 4, tyere removed and replaced with sound ipner heart of rimn timber on Kanieri , River bridge. Traffic planking three feet in width under each wheel was placed on Crayfish Creek bridge, 8/18x9x2 inner heart of rimu beipg used Sor the purpose. The timber . used on Kanieri River bridge amounts tp 208.4 superficial feet, and on Gray* fish Creek bridge 198 superficial feet, a total amount of 485,4 superficial feet. LOWER KOKATAHI ROAP r Motor worn holes, depressions, and small scours, were repaired with gravel from Kanieri to Camblback Road, and a light coat of fine gravl placed on the road surface from (Samp Street, Kanieri,-to the top of Morris Hill, a distance, of twelve chains. Blackberi'y and gorse were cleaned on the western slope of Morris’ Hill for a distant? of nine chains. The total quantity of gravel used in repairs amounts to 145 cubic yards., UPPER KOKATAHI ROAD. Upper Kokatahi. road was repaired ,V wifh gravel where! necessary over a disf tance of miles/ 30 cubic yards of £ , gravel being used. ■ o■> . -, :■ ; district Hoads report. chains, and a drain cleaned on the 'eastern side of the road from 16 chains Jt0525 chains. 1 On the southern side of the creek, the soft formation was reconditioned for 30 chains in length, and blackberry and gorse cleared for twenty feet in width from 1 mile 20 chains. Metalling was continued on the south bank of Acre Creek at peg 35 chains, and 2 feet in width, and 9 inches and 12 inches in height over disconnected seotions, totalling 32 'chains, 25 links -in- length. Outlets to culverts and watertables were e’ean■ed where necessary.

Malfroy’s bridge repairs, the balance of grant was continued by the Bridge Foreman, H. Reynolds, ’ work being confined; to securing the ends, of wind bracing to lower chords with £ diameter screw bolts instead of spikes, MAINTENANCE Repairs were effected to motor worn holes on Humphreys, Arahura Valley, On Mile and Blue Spur-Humphreys roads. Unemployed labour was usefully employed in filling the road lorries, clearing and cleaning a section of Two Mile Road, clearing and reducing low bank s on the outer side of One Mile and a portion of Arahura Valley Roads clearing gorge and blackberry and cleaning watertables from Awatuna to Gillam’s Gully Road on the Miafin Highway ; cleaning gorse and blackberry on the Main Highway be- !■ tween Kaihinn and Four Mile Creek bridge, reducing a point on the 'Main Highway beyond Goldsbcrough; repairing motor worn holes, and cleaning watertables on Ivumara and Blue Spur Arahura roads; also clearing and repairing Chesterfield track, CENTRAL RIDING. MAINTENANCE. \ .were effected to portions •of 'MuVicip'al, McAr.thuir, Station, South Hoki.liktf and Adairs Roads. The Bridge Foreman attended to the reconstruetion and ra’ising of a platform culvert and approaches on Upper Municipal road; also levelling and redecking a part’v collapsed culvert on , Whitcomb© Valley road. Unemployed labour was employed in clearing and cleaning .drains and watertables on B’ue Spur, Han Hau, and South Hokitika roads, widening Hokitikp-Hau

Hau. _ and the upper portion of Arthurstown roads. SOUTHERN RIDING. Throe Mile Track diversion was continued and completed to the northern bank of Three Mile Creek, and the old track between Okarito and Three Mile Creek repaired with corduroy. A quantity of manuka scrub was cut on Okarito road in readiness for repairs to the swampy portion of Three Mile track near Okarito. Detour Road repairs. Repairs were effected to scours and motor worn holes on Detour road, and an 8 inch pipe culvert constructs across the roadway near the hotel to prevent flooding during wet weather. , MAINTENANCE. Repairs were effected to portions of Wataroa Flat, and soft boggy sections repaired with corduroy on Rotoklno road. The roadman at Harihari attended to the removal with explosives of stranded timber in the Little Wanganui river bed. The first portion of Poerua road from the Main Highway to the ford crossing, was repaired with the King Drag, and repairs were effected with grave] to portions of Robertson, La Fontaine, and Petersen roads, No. 3 lorry being used frr the purpose. Ruatapu road diversion beyond South Creek bridge was continued with mienipke’ed labour. WILLIAM MILLXER,
