The New Zealand cricketers commenced their match against an English eleven here to-day. The weather was wintry, and the wicket appeared to be dead, but actually the ball kicked appreciably. \ Lowry won the toss. The English team was; —Chapman, Hammond, Tennyson, Woolley, Anns, Pataudi, Owen-Smith, Lowndes, Caltliorpe, Allom, Freeman/ England's opening bowlers were Allom and Hammond. The latter became immediately' dangerous, the ball swinging and kicking disconcertingly. Thus Dempster was caught for seven in the slips off his glove.

Mills, when two, mishit Hammond jn attempting to hook a short ball, and was caught. Blunt was three when he was caught 'by the wicket-keeper off Hammond, and Weir was caught also off Hammond in the slips when riine, Four wickets were thus down for 25 .runs.
