£2,158 THEFT
PUBLIC WORKS MONEY. MUCH OF IT RECOVERED, j (By Telegraph —Per Press Association) AUCKLAND, September 4. Discovery of a buried box containing a considerable portion of the sum of £2,158 that was stolen on May sth . last from the Public. Works Depart- J ment office at its base cainp at Multipart, 40 miles south of Kotorua, was ] made by a Maori roadworker at Murupara late this afternooii.. The box was found buried among j some scrub alongside the Wairarapakau Road about 500 yards from the camp where the money was stolen. J Pay envelopes were sticking out of the corner of the box, which was cov- ‘ ered only by a light layer of earth. It has been definitely learned that the money was part of the stolen funds, but the amount found it not j known. . | The theft was made from the safe . of-the paymaster between nine o’clock on May 4th and* 6 a.in. on May sth. 1 The money consisted of wages .for. about 400 men employed on the road. A reward of £2OO was offered for its recovery.
