I JfE reports current in respect of gold mining m tlie district aie all of a very .satisfactory nature, .and indicate the industry lias prospects of a material revival. Ihe harvesting of tile beach deposits is returning many of the southern people rich lewaids, and even visitors have participated In the good leturns. Hie well sustained weekly returns from the Five Alire dredge near Okarito is also heartening, and supports the first reports as to the promising proposition the dredging proposal was. Hie effect of the success with the Qkarito plant is encouraging others to venture, and schemes are afoot at noth Gillespies and Waikukupj, beaches to work the neircli deposits 'by ma'&Yiuery. Now lias come tiiy report of a very promising gold discovery at Cedar Cieea, in the locality where the William Toil Quartz Mining Coy. once operated. Ihe belief has been prevalent with those acquainted with the legality, that a good lode existed in the neighbourhood. Alter a considerable lapse or time a sydnicate took the matter up, and it is the outcome of the present enterprise that the new discovery lias been made. The operations are under the direction of Mr F. Bienvirth, who has shown faith in the venture all along, and the encouraging success now met with will be very gratifying to those who have shown their faith in the undertaking. It is to be hoped the further prospecting now in hand will meet- with further success in establishing an extent of the rich stone,, and if so a. very satisfactory development should result. It is very pleasing to know of the enterprise shown in this matter, for the locality is wot very accessible, and a. rich reward will he well earned. A fresh lease to mining in this district would be very helpful at this juncture, and with the other fenterprises in hand in either parts of Westland, we may anticipate in some measure at least, a return of the former golden era. The prospects are not without hope for there is a distinct leaning towards mining enteiprises, which are all of some promise.
