OBITUARY
SIR HALL CAINE. (United Press Aushoeiataon—By EJeotrn Telegraph— Copyright). LONDON, August 31. The death has occurred of Sir Hall Caine, the novelist, at the age of 78 after being in ill health for some time. /“The Deemster,” and “The Alanx man” were among hi R b t est known earlier novels. “The AVoman Thou Gavest Me” was published in 1913, and “The Master of Alan” in 1921, also “The AVoman of Knockaloe” in 1923. He later began writing a life of Christ. He was knighted in 1918. In 1916 his play “Margaret Shiller” was produced in the United States. Sir Hall Caine died at Greeba Castle, Isle of Man, as he had always wished. His illness began with heart trouble, and then congestion of the lungs developed. Lady Caine and her sons, Derwent and Ralph, were present. Both sens have been members of tbe House of Commons. It has been suggested that Sir Hall Caine, as the greatest Manxman should be buried in the old ruined chapel of Peel Castle. “The Life of Christ,” to which he devoted years of l work, ts unfinished.-’ His failure to complete this work cast a gloom over the novelist’s life for the past three years.
