QUEST FOR GOLD

GABRIEL’S GULLY AREA. I ' DUNEDIN, August 27. A good deal has been heard of a project for working the cement deposits in the Tuapeka and \Y aitahuna districts, near Lawrence, but more recently the quartz reefs that are known to exist, in this locality have been attracting attention. It is believed that these will soon come into their own. A prospecting license has been applied for over ground in the vicinity of the old Gabriel’s Gully quartz reef, lying on the Gabriel’s side of the ridge between Blue Spur and Wetherstones. A stamper battery was in operation on this lode in 1872 and 1873, and it produced sonle good gold returns. A\ hen payable stone was lost- work in the mine was suspended;* and althofigli two or three local parties made efforts to pick it up again they were unsuccessful. A strong belief still exists that there is payable stone in the locality.
