CUSTOMS REVENUE

AT WELLINGTON. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 31 A further big decrease was recover ed in the net customs revenue' collected at Wellington for August as compared with August, 1930. The figures were £178,779 and £247,834 respectively a. drop of £69,0-55. For the past eight months of this year, the revenue was £1,502,186, as against £2,032,894 for the corresponding period of last year, a decrease of £530,708. The duty collected on motor spirit last month was £27,951, as against £33,001 in August last year. The figures for the past eight months are £336,299 and £288,298 respectively.

The collections of tire tax last month was £3,236, against £3,016 last year, For the past eight months a decrease of £7,479 is recorded, the figures being £18,587 and £26,066 respectively.

The beer excise collection for August was £4,377, against £3,800, an increase of £577. For the eight months in each year, the figures are £32,647 and £35,174 respectively.' DUNEDIN RETURNS. DUNEDIN, August 31. The Customs returns, for the month ended to-day were: --£45,829 2s 3d, as against £75,999 18s for the corresponding period last year. Beer duty was £21,590 5s Bd, as against £12,130 0s 7d. Motor-tyre tax amounted to £1391 14s Bd, as against £1062 0s Id for the corresponding period last year. Petrol tax was £9028 6s 3d as against £6411 6s 3d in August 1930. (Tire above figures do not appear to be correct.) The vital statistics for the month ended to-day were as follows (figures for the corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis): Births 112 (115). deaths 80 (96),'marriages 53 (51). The number of deaths recorded in August was the smallest for some years.
