BRITISH POLITICS

SNOWDEN TO RETIRE. t United Press Association.—By Electri# Telegraph.—-Copyright.! LONDON, August 28. Mr Snowden, confirming the report of his retirement, in a letter to his constituents, says: Although I had a remarkable recovery, I am compelled at the age of 67 to realise that I cannot expect to lie able to continue the strenuous life I have lived for the last 40 years. I must seek rest from the arduous work in the Commons with its mug hours and late sittings. The decision of Mr Snowden to retire from Parliament at the next general election, is regretted on personal grounds by members of all political parties. For years past, 1 Parliamentarians have admired the extraordinary courage and determination which Mr Snowden, both in office and in opposition, devoted himself to his duties in spite of constant physical disability and frequent illness. It constantly seemed that he kept himself going by the exercise of immense will power. The strain upon him was even more marked since a recent severe operation.

A FRENCH VIEWPOINT. (Received this day at 9.25 a.m) PARIS, August 30. While the Press generally recognises the recent development as a proof of the stability of British credit, M. Pertinax, writing from London, declares the Conservatives and Labourites with whom he . oopversed, still shirk crucial question of how British production costs can be reduced sufficiently to enable the export trade to stand up to foreign competition. He says no. one seems prepared to face the necessary moderation of the standard of living. ITALIAN OPINION. ROME, August 30. Fascist opinion is that British public and private expenditure must be curbed. Few believe even the new Cabinet has sufficient courage to force the labouring classes to live less extravagantly.
