COAL MINE TROUBLE
WORK STOPPING. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association) WHANGAREL, August 31. A meeting of Hikurangi Miners’ Union yesterday discussed the situation arising from the order given by Wilsons (N.Z.) Portland Cement Coy. to Hikurangi Coal Company for 500 tons of coal weekly.
The manager of the Hikurangi Company said the order would have to be filled if the mine were to .continue working. The meeting thereupon decided that no Unionist lie allowed to supply coal to the Cement Company and that employees of Hokurnngi! Company’s mine should strike.
This morning word was received that this was given effect to, none except emergencies appearing at the mine.
Asked whether the National Council would stop it provided Wilsons placed orders with mines outside of Hikurangi district, a high official of t*te Union gave an impression in the affirmative. The official admitted the possibility of Government reserve coal at Wellington being made available to the Cement Coy. The official added that the Union was awaiting developments in this connection.
