. ... - ■ ! *: a > DUXEWN SENTENCES. (By Teleyraph,~~Fer Frets Association) DUNEDIN, August 29. The following prisoners were sentenced here to-day:—Matthew C'orlet, aged nineteen, for theft of postal packets as a postal officer, two years’ Borstal. William Newton, by breaking, entering and theft by day in connection with a sensational robbery of three thousand pounds’ worth of jewellery from a city shop, for which another man is serving a sentence, was sentenced to three years and six months hard labour. In this case the Judge had previously granted the unusual request of the prisoner that he be allowed to assist the police to recover the jewellery. The Crown intimated that only one hundred and fifty pounds’ worth had been recovered.

Sentences were pased at the Napier Supreme Court by Justice Reed as follows :—Leonard John Cookson, for escaping from gaol, two years’ hard labour, aud for breaking, entering and theft, eighteen months’ hard, to be concurrent. Fred Matthews, alias Scott, for breaking, entering and theft, received three years’ hard labour, to be followed by two years’ reformative treatment. Matthews entered an explosive magazine, stealing quantities of gelginite, and expressed his intention to start on an extensive crime campaign with a machine gun. a car and armed companions. Jonathan iPex Swabrrick. for theft of sheep, got two years’ probation. Frank Edward Yates, 'for breaking, entering and theft, following the earthquake, was given 18 months’ bard labour, and declared an habitual criminal.
