WHANGAREI, August 29
There is no immediate sign of a settlement of the strike at Wilson’s (N.Z.) Portland Cement Company’s mine at Hikurangi, which has been idle since August 19 last. A development .3 contained in a letter sent to the Secretary of the Hikurangi Miners’ l> ; on. in which the Manager of , U'e Hikurangi Coal Company stated that the Wilson’s Company have placed an order for 509 tons of coal weekly lom the Hikurangi Company’s mine, winii would enable full time work there, and help considers by in relieving general stress.
The President of the Miners’ Union promptly rejoined that if any coal were supplied to the Portland Company from the Hikurangi Company’s mine the Union would order the withdrawal of all the men from that colliery. The miners’ delegates, who met Wilson’s Directors iii Auckland yesterday, will report to a meeting of the strikers at Hikurangi to-niorrOw. The result is awaited With tense aiixiety, as it i$ officially stated that if Wilson’s mule is left untended for another week, it will he impossible te replace the pumps, and other plant, which have been withdrawn, and this will render the mine derelict, besides jeopardises* the contiguous mine of the Hikurangi Company.
