OBITUARY

JAMES PARK. AETAT 77 YEARS. It is with regret that we record the death of Mr James Park, Crown Pro-ot-euLor lor Westland, which took place this morning about lour o’clock somewhat suddenly. T>he deceased had been a prominent citizen of the town over a long period of years an.l his death will be deplored by a wide circle of friends. Mr Park was a son of the late Mr Gavin Park who came out to New Zealand .in the ship “Philip Laing” in the later forties. Mr Park was born 1 1 Lyttelton ill 1854, was educated privately and attended Otago Univers.ty. He was articled to Messrs Joyce and Adams in 1879, passed his first series of examinations in 1881 and becoming duly qualified was admitted to the Bar in 1883 by the late Mr Justice Williams. He then came to Hokitika where he established the well-known legal business that has been so successfully carried on ever since, being appointed Crown Prosecutor after W. M, Purkiss, and lie ha s held the appointment ever, since. Some years ago Mr J. A. Murdoch joined the firm, which has since been known as that of Park add Murdoch. Mr Parlt interested himself to a very great extent lit the advancement of the district especial v in connection with mining operations. In his younger days he took a keen interest in boating and was a well-k: own figure oil the river and lakes in his canoe. He was a prominent member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, and was superintendent of the Sunday School for many years. Mr Park was married three times and leaves a widow and family of one daughter (Miss Muriel Park of Wanganui), and f-ur son s (James of Fiji, Hugh and Eric of Hokitika and Archibald of Wellington). There are two brothers (Mr William Park of Christchurch and Mr George Park of Wellington). To the bereaved wife and faimlv the deep sympathy of the community will be extended!.
