CRICKET

THE NEW ZEALAND TOUR,

AGAINST KENT,

A HEAVY DEFEAT

KENT WIN BY NINE WICKETS.

United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.)

(Received Hi is day at 9.25 a.m) CANTERBURY, August 28. New Zealand cricketers continued against Kent in fine weather, but made a poor showing against accurate, unchanged bowling of Marriott and Freeman. Lowry and Vivian saved an inning’s defeat, but the others were disappointing.

The New cricketers were beaten by Kent by nine wickets. The New Zealanders (display was 'extremely disappointing. With one exception tlvS batting in both innings was below’ the standard. This, coupled with poor catching yesterday, was chiefly responsible for the defeat. The batsmen this morning principally got themselves out. Marriott bowled steadily, swinging the ball well and was not exceptionally difficult. The batsmen simply made bad mistakes. The last four wickets added only 15. Marriott bowled 34 overs aitd ten maidens. Kent’s keenness to will was shown by the return of Freeman, who was still, slightly .inconvenienced by an injured shoulder.
