The modest reply of the lit. Hon. G. W. Forbes on the Budget debate w.v- in keeping with his record. Though brief, his remarks were to the point, and they were courteous enough not to raise the ire of his critics. Mr Forbes has developed into a very capable lender. He assumed office without receiving much app ecUition, but he soon began to win friends and .confidence from the people by his fair way of treating all who came before him. Mr Forbes is not an aggressive speaker, but he is plain spoken ard goes direct* to has subject. It is well thpt such a one leads at the present time when the country needs to be told the truth. The truth has not been pleasant because of the serious position revealed, but Ml' Forbes has not attempted to hde the facts nor jiiggle with the situation. It is rather remarkable the amount of public favour he has won with all shades of public opinion. This . has been evidenced in a very practical way by "the 1 number of ■ converts' from the Reform party who hnve agreed to contest elections under the banner of the United party. That change of heart has been due entirely to appreciation of Mr Forbes mcl bis methods of both leadership and administration. Another factor is the manner in which Mr Forbes sticks to his task. He is very attentive to duties, and-is essentially an office man in contrast to perambulating the* country. No doubt when it is necessary to go before the people and expound liis policy be will do so, but till that need arises he is the man of duty and business at headquarters always on the spot to deal with the public business. Mr Forbes is therefore the most outstanding figure on the political horizon at present and appears to he excellently placed for the task which is before him.’
