RUSSIAN SYSTEM. A VISITOR’S IMPRESSION. AUCKLjAND, August 25. Valuable opportunities of seeirfg for himself conditions in Russia were enjoyed last May by Dr. J. D. Salmond (Knox College), who returned to New Zealand, yesterday by the Niagara. Dr.. Salmond was recently appointed professor and director of religious education for the Presbyterian Church fti Ne-ff ’mi®# ®cf* fo^thd*plis£ , fhr&e years has been pursuing educational and theological studies abroad. For eighteen months he studied at Boston and Yale, and had a comprehensive tour of Europe before undertaking further study at the London Day Training College. He later spent a month in Russia and visited the Holy Land and Egypt on his way back to his native country.
“In a general way I feel educationally that we can learn much from Americans/’ said Dr. Salmond. “Their zeal for education and for fine buildings and equipment is admirable, but when it comes to the solid things of education -we can learn much more fx-om Britain.
■, “I feel that Russia presents a tremendous challenge. It is useless calling them'' names. We must confront Communism by something better. Christianity is the only system that ea,n confront it successfully. The ti-ouble is that there is little attempt being made to apply Christianity socially.” Among places of great -interest which Dr. Salmond visited in Russia was the Marriage and Divorce Coiut, in Leningrad. Two women presided over it.
