WHAT IS NECESSARY
(By Telegraph—Per Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 26. Mr H. D. Acland, President of the •New Zealand Sheep Owners’ and Farmers’ Federation, at the annual meeting to-day, said that a readjustment of costs, sufficient to enable the industry to pay its way was essential. Unnecessary restrictions of all kinds on their industry ' must be removed, and the community must he given a free hand to adjust affairs along economic lines. ■ ;- . ■
fle asserted that rents and interest, charges, also taxation and their payments for all service must be adjusted to meet altered .conditions if the Dominion was to survive and' meet obligations overseas. The gravity of the situation could not he over stated. Immediate action was required if default were to be avoided. There was no indication to-day of any other , man a period of low prices,’ and Very little prospect ‘ of any substantial increase in the national income. Heavy sacrifices , had already been made by capital. This was evidenced by the dowered values of interest bv mortgagees on farm land. They could only hope that the Government would recognise the responsibility to take steps to ease th'e Burden of taxation and to lower the costs of services to the community to a point which will enable the country to meet its obligations, If' this were not done, then private effort ,mupt fall, an,d the community generally, must ultimately v suffer, still greater hardship. •. \ ■
